Having issues with your BookNest account? This guide covers common account-related problems and their solutions.

Password Issues

Forgot Password

To reset your password:

  1. Go to the login page
  2. Click “Forgot Password?”
  3. Enter your email address
  4. Click “Send Reset Link”
  5. Check your email for reset instructions
  6. Click the link in the email
  7. Enter your new password (twice)
  8. Click “Reset Password”
  9. Log in with your new password

If you don’t receive the email:

  • Check your spam/junk folder
  • Verify you used the correct email address
  • Wait 5-10 minutes for delivery
  • Request a new reset link
  • Contact support if still not received

Can’t Reset Password

Common issues:

Email Not in System

  • Verify the email address
  • Try alternative email addresses you might have used
  • Check if you signed up with Google instead

Reset Link Expired

  • Links expire after 1 hour
  • Request a new reset link
  • Complete the process within 1 hour

Reset Link Not Working

  • Try copying and pasting the full URL
  • Ensure link wasn’t truncated by email client
  • Request a new link
  • Try different browser

Change Password

If you know your current password:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Go to Profile > Settings
  3. Click “Security” tab
  4. Click “Change Password”
  5. Enter current password
  6. Enter new password (twice)
  7. Click “Update Password”
  8. You’ll be logged out and need to log back in

Password Requirements:

  • Minimum 8 characters
  • At least one uppercase letter
  • At least one lowercase letter
  • At least one number
  • Special characters recommended

Email Issues

Change Email Address

To update your email:

  1. Go to Settings > Account
  2. Click “Change Email”
  3. Enter new email address
  4. Enter your password to confirm
  5. Click “Send Verification”
  6. Check new email inbox
  7. Click verification link
  8. Email is updated

Important Notes:

  • Verification required before change takes effect
  • Use new email for future logins
  • All notifications go to new email

Email Not Verified

If your email isn’t verified:

  1. Look for banner at top of dashboard
  2. Click “Resend Verification Email”
  3. Check email (including spam)
  4. Click verification link
  5. You’ll be redirected to BookNest

Why verification matters:

  • Required for password resets
  • Needed for certain features
  • Helps secure your account
  • Enables email notifications

Not Receiving Emails

Troubleshooting:

  1. Check spam/junk folder

  2. Check email settings

    • Verify notifications are enabled
    • Check email preferences in settings
    • Ensure email address is correct
  3. Email provider issues

    • Some providers block automated emails
    • Check provider’s spam policies
    • Try alternative email address
  4. Whitelist BookNest

    • Add @booknest.app domain to safe senders
    • Create filter rule to inbox
    • Contact your email provider if needed

Account Access Issues

Account Locked

Why accounts get locked:

  • Multiple failed login attempts
  • Suspicious activity detected
  • Security measure activation

To unlock:

  1. Wait 30 minutes

    • Automatic unlock after cooldown
    • Then try logging in again
  2. Reset password

    • Use forgot password feature
    • Creates new secure password
    • Unlocks account
  3. Contact support

    • If still locked after 30 minutes
    • Provide username or email
    • Verify your identity

Account Suspended

Reasons for suspension:

  • Violation of Community Guidelines
  • Terms of Service breach
  • Reported by multiple users
  • Suspicious activity

What to do:

  1. Check your email for suspension notice
  2. Review the reason provided
  3. If you believe it’s a mistake:
  4. Wait for review (typically 3-5 business days)

During suspension:

  • Can’t access most features
  • Can still view appeal status
  • Data is preserved

Account Banned

Permanent bans for:

  • Severe ToS violations
  • Repeated suspensions
  • Harassment or abuse
  • Illegal activity

If banned:

  1. Review ban notice email
  2. Submit appeal if you believe it’s an error
  3. Provide detailed explanation
  4. Appeals reviewed on case-by-case basis

Note: Most bans are permanent and appeals are rarely successful.

Profile Issues

Can’t Update Profile

Common problems:

Changes Not Saving

  1. Check internet connection
  2. Ensure all required fields filled
  3. Try shorter bio/description
  4. Clear browser cache
  5. Try different browser

Profile Picture Won’t Upload

  1. Check file size (max 5MB)
  2. Use supported formats (JPG, PNG, GIF)
  3. Try smaller image
  4. Compress image before uploading
  5. Clear cache and try again

Username Already Taken

  1. Try variations
  2. Add numbers or underscores
  3. Be creative with alternatives

Lost Access to Profile

Can’t view your own profile:

  1. Ensure you’re logged in
  2. Clear browser cache
  3. Check if account suspended
  4. Try direct URL: /dashboard/profile
  5. Contact support if persistent

Two-Factor Authentication (2FA)

Can’t Access 2FA Code

If you lost your authenticator:

  1. Use backup codes provided during setup
  2. Click “Use backup code” on login page
  3. Enter one backup code
  4. Disable 2FA in settings
  5. Re-enable with new device

If no backup codes:

  1. Contact support immediately
  2. Provide account verification details:
    • Email address
    • Username
    • Recent account activity
    • Last books added
  3. Support will verify and disable 2FA

Lost Backup Codes

To generate new backup codes:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. Go to Settings > Security
  3. Click “Regenerate Backup Codes”
  4. Save new codes securely
  5. Old codes are invalidated

Account Recovery

Completely Locked Out

If you can’t access your account at all:

  1. Try password reset first

    • Use forgot password feature
    • Check all possible email addresses
  2. Verify account details

    • Confirm username
    • Confirm email used
    • Check if using social login
  3. Contact support

    • Use contact form
    • Provide as much information as possible:
      • Username
      • Email address
      • Approximate account creation date
      • Recent books added
      • Any transaction IDs (if applicable)
  4. Identity verification

    • Support may ask verifying questions
    • Prove account ownership
    • Process may take 1-3 business days

Account Deletion

Temporarily Deactivate

Note: This feature may not be available yet

To deactivate account:

  1. Settings > Account
  2. Click “Deactivate Account”
  3. Confirm decision
  4. Account hidden but data preserved
  5. Can reactivate anytime by logging in

Permanently Delete Account

To delete your account:

  1. Go to Settings > Account
  2. Scroll to bottom
  3. Click “Delete Account”
  4. Read warnings carefully
  5. Enter password to confirm
  6. Type “DELETE” to confirm
  7. Click “Permanently Delete My Account”

What happens:

  • Account immediately inaccessible
  • All data permanently deleted within 30 days
  • Cannot be undone after 30 days
  • Reviews and comments removed
  • Club memberships terminated
  • Challenges forfeited

Before deleting:

  • Export your data
  • Consider deactivating instead
  • Leave clubs gracefully
  • This cannot be undone!

Delete Account Request

If you can’t access delete button:

  1. Contact support
  2. Subject: “Account Deletion Request”
  3. Provide:
    • Username
    • Email address
    • Reason (optional)
  4. Support will verify and process

Data & Privacy

Download Your Data

To export all your data:

  1. Settings > Privacy & Data
  2. Click “Download My Data”
  3. Confirm request
  4. Wait for email (can take up to 24 hours)
  5. Download link valid for 7 days
  6. Includes all books, reviews, sessions, etc.

Change Privacy Settings

Control your data visibility:

  1. Settings > Privacy
  2. Configure:
    • Profile visibility
    • Reading activity visibility
    • Review visibility
    • Statistics visibility
  3. Save changes

Report Privacy Concern

If you believe your privacy was violated:

  1. Contact support immediately
  2. Explain the issue in detail
  3. Include relevant screenshots
  4. We take privacy seriously

Contacting Support

When you need to contact us:

  1. Go to Contact page
  2. Select issue category
  3. Provide detailed description
  4. Include:
    • Username or email
    • What you were trying to do

    • Screenshots (if helpful)
  5. Submit ticket

Response time:

  • Critical issues: 24 hours
  • Standard issues: 2-3 business days
  • Low priority: 5-7 business days

Emergency Access

For urgent account security issues:

  1. Use subject line: “URGENT: Account Security”
  2. Explain the security concern
  3. Priority response within 24 hours

Prevention Tips

Keep Your Account Secure

  1. Use strong passwords

    • Unique to BookNest
    • Mix of characters
    • Change periodically
  2. Enable 2FA

    • Extra security layer
    • Save backup codes safely
  3. Verify email address

    • Required for password resets
    • Keeps account recoverable
  4. Keep email access

    • Maintain email account
    • Update if changing email
    • Check regularly
  5. Remember your credentials

    • Use password manager
    • Keep backup of username
    • Note which email you used
  6. Review account activity

    • Check for suspicious activity
    • Log out from unused devices
    • Report anything unusual
